The Kennel Club and the Bulldog Breed Standard

Quote from Dog World / 24th September 2009

Dog World - 39 new standards: "The KC is urging breed clubs to unite with them ‘in order to safeguard the health of pedigree dogs’.
“We would be very sad if any breed was to walk away from the KC,” said spokesman Caroline Kisko. “We believe that by working together we can all best achieve our joint aim of improving the long-term health and welfare of dogs.
“However, in the face of resistance to changes that we believe are in the breed’s best interest, we will not be swayed and will be forced to allow those breed clubs to walk away."

The emergency meeting is tomorrow, so if you have anything to say about this, say so now! To be honest, my personal feeling is that the KC want us to walk away so they can dis-associate themselves with the public opinion of the unhealthy bulldog. To not take into account any of the points raised with them at the meeting the sub committee attended and to then make the comment "we beleive that by working together we can all best acheive our joint aim ...." when they are clearly NOT working with the Bulldog Breed Council; to say "we will not be swayed and will be forced to allow those breed clubs to walk away" to me says that is what they've wanted from the start. Face it, whenever the Mail, or the BBC or anyone who has an axe to grind with pedigree dogs it's always the bulldog that comes under fire so it makes sense that they wish to distance themselves from it. However, although there is still the breed standard that is owned by the Bulldog Club incorporated that would be easy to revert back to, from a rescue point of view, having no KC registration to check back on to ensure that what we are rehoming is infact a pure bred bulldog could make our life very difficult in the future. We will see the outcome from the meeting tomorrow - but we will see.

  1. Tania seems to us you have hit the nail on the head.Tomorrow will be very interesting
    for us.Surprised how quiet the bulldoggers have got.I guess bulldoggers just did not realise how much this is all about control and money and not really about the dog's health and conformation , otherwise the KC would have at least accepted the Breed Council standard sub committee "tail" recommendation.Both the Chairman and Secretary of the KC have sung from the same hymn sheet since December 08.They hold the monopoly on showing and judging unfortunately and also have the famous rule 42 they can use to quell any opposition or dissent.

  2. To put things even more in perspective, you may have seen in the blog about Floydd that we had a bulldog returned because he had a tail. The family that adopted him (instead of saying they didn't want him) asked us to collect him the night they had picked him up because he "didn't look like a bulldog". Apart from the stress it caused the dog, and ourselves having to travel him from Lancashire to Sussex late Friday night, if the breed standard is accepted and all bulldogs have to look like Buster, who will want them?

  3. It seems that no matter how much breeders care or how many health checks you do to prove the breed is in good health, the KC have already made a deal for which no one can sway them.
    What happens to all the financial income/support they would loose if all bulldog owners decided to boycott the shows! Would they listen - would they care....

  4. The breed council meeting went much smoother than I thought it would and they will issue a statement shortly which I will reporoduce here as soon as it becomes publicly available. In short the new breed standard will be implemented and we will not be walking away from the kennel club, but I came away from the meeting feeling that the KC had made a complete mockery of the Breed Council existence.

  5. BULLDOG HISTORY IN THE MAKING. 29.09.09

    AT THE BULLDOG BREED COUNCIL MEETING HELD THIS MORNING 29.09.09 ATTENDED BY 16 OF THE MEMBER CLUBS TO DISCUSS THE INTENDED PUBLICATION ON OCTOBER 1.2009 BY THE KENNEL CLUB OF ITS REVISED BULLDOG BREED STANDARD THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT WAS RELEASED FOR PUBLICATION IN THE DOG PRESS;

    "THE BREED COUNCIL IS DISAPPOINTED WITH THE RESULT OF THE NEGOTIATIONS WITH THE KENNEL CLUB REGARDING THE STANDARD. WE ARE PARTICULARLY DISAPPOINTED BY THE STATEMENT EMANATING FROM THE KENNEL CLUB THAT THE HEALTH OF THE BREED HAS DETERIORATED WHEN IN FACT THE OPPOSITE IS CLEARLY THE CASE AS EVIDENCED BY THE SUCCESS OF THE BREED IN GROUP AND BEST IN SHOW COMPETITION AND THE HUGE RISE IN POPULARITY OF THE NATIONAL BREED. CONTRARY TO THE RUMOURS, THE BREED COUNCIL WILL CONTINUE TO WORK WITH THE KENNEL CLUB TO PROMOTE THE HEALTH OF THE BULLDOG"
